Q

What Are the Differences Between "Vacuum Suction Cups" and "Pneumatic Grippers" for Injection Molding Machine Robots? How to Choose End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT) in Practical Applications?

A

End-of-arm tooling (EOAT) is the core component of the robot that directly contacts products and molds. Wrong fixture selection can easily lead to unstable grasping, dropped parts, scratches, or even mold collision accidents. The two most common grasping methods are vacuum suction cups and pneumatic grippers, with obvious differences in their application logic:

Vacuum Suction Cup          Negative Pressure Suction Principle

Application Scenarios: Plastic parts with flat, smooth, large-area, and lightweight surfaces (e.g., flat cover plates, thin-wall boxes, transparent panels, etc.).

• Core Advantages: Made of silicone or fluororubber material, the soft contact does not leave scratches on product surfaces and has a high tolerance for minor dimensional tolerances.

• Application Limitations: When facing workpieces with uneven surfaces, frosted textures, or heavy oil stains, it easily loses suction force due to air leakage.

Pneumatic Gripper          Mechanical Physical Clamping

• Application Scenarios: Workpieces with complex structures, heavy weight, uneven surfaces, or requiring large clamping force (e.g., automotive parts, home appliance housings, etc.).

• Core Advantages: Relies on cylinder-driven metal or resin fingers, with extremely firm grasping, not affected by workpiece surface material or texture.

• Application Limitations: High requirements for product clamping position tolerances; improper air pressure control may leave clamping marks on soft surfaces.

Best Practice Solution: In practical injection molding automation applications, a "suction + clamping combined" composite EOAT is usually adopted. For example, while extracting parts, use suction cups to stabilize the main product body and grippers to fix the sprue, thereby ensuring high speed and high reliability of the entire part extraction process.
