Q

"Limitations" of In-Mold Labeling: Which Scenarios Are Not Suitable for Use?

A

Although in-mold labeling has significant advantages, it is not suitable for all products. When evaluating project feasibility, special attention should be paid to the following 3 types of limitation scenarios to avoid blind investment:

1. Small-Batch Customized Products                    Uneven Cost

In-mold labeling requires customizing dedicated molds and labels according to container size, with relatively high upfront fixed investment (mold costs usually range from several thousand to tens of thousands of yuan). If the order volume is only a few hundred or a few thousand, the cost allocated to a single product will far exceed traditional labeling, with extremely low cost-effectiveness.

2. Products with Frequent Label Design Changes                    Longer Cycle

Since the label and container are molded synchronously, if frequent pattern changes are needed (such as holiday limited editions, quarterly new products), each time requires re-sampling to make labels and adjusting the mold, with the adjustment cycle usually as long as 1~2 weeks (traditional labeling only takes 1~2 days to replace printing factory templates).

3. Irregular or Ultra-Thick Containers                    Process Limited

In-mold labeling has extremely high requirements for mold precision and robot positioning. Overly complex irregular containers (such as irregular curved surfaces, multi-edge designs) are difficult to achieve precise label suction and fit, prone to wrinkling and offset; in addition, ultra-thick containers with wall thickness exceeding 5mm can easily lead to loose bonding between the label and the plastic due to uneven heat dissipation during the cooling process.

Selection Recommendation: In-mold labeling is more suitable for conventional medium-thin wall plastic containers with large batches, high standardization, and relatively stable layout. If it belongs to small-batch trial and error or products with overly complex structures, it is recommended to first adopt traditional labeling solutions.
