Plastic Classification & Injection Molding: How to Precisely Tune the Machine Based on Material Properties?

When it comes to plastic classification, some people only know soft plastics, hard plastics, and transparent plastics. How molten plastic flows and shrinks in the mold under high pressure has a lot to do with its own molecular structure and physical properties. To quickly and effectively tune out qualified products, you must first understand the material's characteristics. Nowadays, various modified materials and alloy materials are increasingly common. Let's skip textbook theory and use plain, straightforward language to discuss the categories of injection molding materials and tuning essentials.

    I. Classification by Crystallinity: Crystalline vs. Amorphous

Veterans will always check whether the material is "amorphous plastic" or "crystalline plastic" before tuning. This is the litmus test of professional tuning.

01. Amorphous Plastics (Common examples: PC, ABS, PMMA, PS)
Material Properties: Microscopic molecular chains are like a tangled mess. No fixed melting point—gradually softens as temperature rises. Irregular molecular chain arrangement, low dimensional shrinkage, and good transparency.
Tuning Essentials: When molecular chains are forced into the mold and forcibly frozen, large internal stress is generated (especially for PC material—low mold temperature / fast injection speed easily leads to cracking when screwing). High mold temperature must be used, and holding pressure cannot be applied all at once; allow it to "temper" in the cavity to relieve stress.
02. Crystalline Plastics (Common examples: PP, PE, PA, POM)
Material Properties: Molecular chains arrange neatly when cooled to the crystallization temperature. Has a fixed melting point—melts immediately when heated to melting point, hardens immediately when cooled to melting point. Dense molecular chain arrangement, high shrinkage rate.
Tuning Essentials: Mold temperature must be well controlled. If mold temperature is too low (e.g., POM/PC), the raw material rapidly cools and freezes. After demolding, the molecular chains slowly rearrange over a few days at room temperature, causing the product to continuously shrink. Be sure to use appropriate mold temperature and sufficient holding time to allow full shrinkage and setting.

    II. Classification by Performance & Application

General-Purpose Plastics    Basic & Commonly Used
Daily injection molding materials with large output, wide application, good moldability, and lower prices.
Engineering Plastics    Structural Component Grade
Possess good mechanical strength, heat resistance, and wear resistance, can withstand certain external forces, and often replace metal for structural components.
Specialty Plastics    High-End & Special
Have unique physical properties (e.g., extremely high heat resistance, corrosion resistance, or insulation), applied in special and stringent industrial scenarios.

III. Summary & Exchange

Each material has its own different "temperament." You must fully understand their temperament to tune the parameters well. The parameters on the control panel are just numbers, but the several-hundred-degree melt flowing in the mold cavity is "alive." You need to know clearly in your head at what temperature it flows smoothly and at what temperature it shrinks completely.
