Q

What Are the Technical Principles and Specific Process Workflow of In-Mold Labels (IML)?

A

In-mold labeling involves embedding pre-printed labels directly into the mold cavity during the blow molding or injection molding process, fusing the labels with the plastic container into one. Below is a detailed analysis of the complete IML process workflow during blow molding/injection molding.

    I. Five-Step IML Workflow for Blow Molding / Injection Molding

01. Label Stacking Preparation                        Pre-Printed Stacking
Neatly stack the pre-printed in-mold labels (divided into front labels and back labels) in individual sheets, and accurately place them respectively in the two dedicated material boxes of the IML machine.
02. Robot Label Suction & Placement                        High-Precision Positioning
When the bottle mold opens, the automated robot precisely picks up the front and back labels, keeping the printed side facing inward and the solid adhesive side facing outward, and accurately places them into both mold cavities.
03. Vacuum Suction Fixation                        Stable & Anti-Displacement
Small vacuum holes on the mold rapidly generate negative pressure, firmly suctioning the labels entering the mold cavity onto the inner mold wall, preventing misalignment during the subsequent blow molding/injection molding stamping process.
04. Blow Molding Mold Closing & Expansion                        High-Temperature Molding
When the heated plastic material in tube form sags down, the mold with labels closes rapidly and high-pressure air is blown in, causing the soft plastic to closely adhere to the inner mold wall and the labels.
05. Hot Melt Integration & Mold Opening                        Perfect Fusion
The high temperature inside the mold cavity melts the solid adhesive on the back of the labels, fully combining them with the bottle prototype. After cooling, the mold opens, the container is formed, and the labels have already integrated with the bottle body.

II. Summary & Exchange

The entire IML process relies on seamless coordination between high-precision automated robots and injection/blow molding machines. Precise label suction, placement, and vacuum control are the key to ensuring labeling without bubbles, wrinkles, or misalignment.
