Q

What Special Requirements Does the In-Mold Labeling (IML) System Impose on Label Materials and Container Design?

A

To ensure seamless fusion during the in-mold labeling (IML) process and finished product quality, the system has clear process standards for label material selection as well as container and mold design:

Label Material Requirements  Homogeneous Fusion
  • Material Compatibility: Labels must select materials that fuse with the injection molding raw materials. The most common is polypropylene (PP), followed by high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

  • Back Adhesive Layer: The back of the label is usually coated with a special synthetic adhesive layer (hot melt adhesive), which can greatly enhance the bonding force with molten plastic during high-temperature high-pressure injection molding.

Container & Mold Design  Structural Adaptation
  • Curved Surfaces & Shapes: Container surfaces should avoid overly sharp angles or deep grooves as much as possible. Smooth or slightly curved surfaces are most conducive to high-flatness label application.

  • Mold Venting Design: The mold must have a good precision venting structure to prevent residual air behind the label from forming bubbles or defects during label feeding and injection molding.
