Q

What Causes Labels to Exhibit Bubbling, Wrinkling, or Misalignment During In-Mold Labeling (IML) Production?

A

This is the most common quality defect issue in IML automated production, mainly caused by the following 3 core factors: electrostatic positioning, material temperature control, and mold cooling.

01. Static Electricity / Uneven Suction          Misalignment & Bubbles
IML robots usually rely on static electricity or vacuum suction when feeding labels. If the static voltage is unstable or mold venting is poor, the labels cannot be stably positioned in the mold cavity, prone to misalignment or bubbles generated due to residual air.
02. Material & Temperature/Pressure Mismatch          Fusion Wrinkling
If the compatibility between the label material and the injection molding resin is poor, or if the temperature and pressure during the injection molding process are insufficient, it will lead to insufficient fusion between the label and the molten plastic, thereby causing surface wrinkling.
03. Uneven Mold Cooling          Deformation Wrinkling
Mold water channel design or uneven cooling will cause plastic containers to develop minor warping during molding and cooling, which in turn pulls and stretches the already attached labels, causing label deformation and wrinkling.
